Leading from the front and feeling lonely?

lonely

My work is inspiring and I am happy to work towards BHAG goals. As one can anticipate, ambitous goals requires a leader to be overcoming challenges on a daily basis. While I am really good at problem solving, some days feel like they never will end. I feel so lonely fighting battles without a finish line. I am not the one who usually looks for support, but I feel the need now.

Most leaders are mindful of staying on top with their skillset. They invest in themselves, in their learning and growth. This helps them reach high positions of power.

What tends to be mostly in the back burner is the support system that will help them sustain the pressure of holding the Executive jobs for long periods of time. This leads to a feeling of being alone in the crowd. Days pass by like trees when they are in a vehicle. It becomes overwhelming and they realize that their energy is plumetting and they need to jump strart themselves for long haules.

If you are leading from the front and feeling lonely, here are some thoughts for your consideration.

In their book, "True North". Bill George, Peter Sims outline the characteristics of a support team every leader should have as below:

  • Help focus on True North

  • Ground in reality

  • Support through highs & lows

team

Who could be possibly in your support team?

  • Coaches

  • Mentors

  • Friends/ Family

  • Contemporaries

  • Advisors

blocker

What comes in the way of creating a support team?

  • Inhibtion to ask for help (Ranting & not enough motivation to create a tribe.)

  • Hiding behind 'introversion' & not cultivating the support team proactively.

  • Too much self reliance and not accounting for personal overwhelms.

overcome

What can help you overcome them?

  • Reverse-mentor

  • Pay it forward

  • Choose 1 person to talk to every 'X' months as a prospect to your support team

  • Be aware of your physical & mental well-being

  • Know that "Introversion" just means having a preference of deriving energy by being alone. It just is a preference/label. Its not a disease.
